Biography

Maureen Kelly Longo, a native of Rhode Island, received a B.A. in Art from Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts. After graduating, she worked for Star Markets, Inc., where among her projects was the design of the Star logo. Moving to Middletown, Connecticut in 1982, she taught drawing and art history at St. John’s School.

Longo considers herself primarily a landscape painter with pastels, watercolors, and acrylics as her preferred mediums. As a member of the Art Guild of Middletown, the Connecticut Pastel Society and the Essex Art Association she exhibits extensively in Connecticut. She has won numerous awards at juried art shows, including Best in Show for “Plymouth Plantation.” For fun, she paints “trompe l’oeil” and has created the whimsical mural for Nikita’s Bar & Bistro in Middletown, CT and the faux stone facades for Graveyard Production’s “Haunted Graveyards” at Lake Compounce Amusement Park.

“The Road Ahead” is part of the permanent collection of the City of Middletown. Longo’s paintings are also featured in private collections throughout New England, New York, California, Alaska, and the United Kingdom.

Artist’s Philosophy

I am drawn to painting nature and capturing the pleasure it brings to everyday life. One often experiences an emotional response to a beautiful scene and wants to remember that feeling forever. Painting allows a permanent connection to that moment in time.

My palette is primarily composed of high-key colors. These best express the drama of nature, while the incorporation of buildings provides the architectural link between man, nature, and God.
